Gregory Porter was a guest and the ‘star in a reasonably priced car’ during Top Gear 2019’s episode 3 (Sunday, March 3rd).
Although the 47-year-old soulful singer was kitted up with a regular crash gear outfit, Top Gear fans spotted a modification to his helmet.
After all, Gregory Porter doesn’t do anything without his trademark hat… but why?

Gregory Porter on Top Gear
The Grammy-winning artist blitzed around the Top Gear track during his appearance on the show, pipping David Tennant’s time with a lap of 1:43:0.
However, it was a cap and chinstrap combo that had chins wagging on Twitter.
An obvious peak poked out from under Gregory’s helmet, where he’d clearly had his helmet modified to ensure that he could wear his cap underneath.
Even the hosts chuckled at Gregory’s cunning crash gear adaptations, with Chris Harris saying:
Before we go any further – c’mon the crash helmet. The guys in production did you a special one with the signature look. Not sure it passes any FIA standards, but it was a nice touch.
Whats the deal with Gregory Porter & the hat? Is it for medical reasons or just because? 🤔 #TopGear

Why Does Gregory Porter Wear a Hat?
Gregory Porter started wearing a hat due to a skin condition on his face and neck area.
Following an operation, Gregory decided to cover up the procedure by wearing a hat.
Eventually, it became synonymous with his work as an artist, and he decided to keep wearing it ever since.
Gregory explained to Jazz Weekly:
I’ve had some surgery on my skin, so this has been my look for a little while and will continue to be for a while longer. People recognise me by it now. It is what it is.
