The 2019 British Academy Television Awards – the BAFTAs – were held last night (Sunday, May 12th) and the usual suspects were all up for awards this year.

And while Phoebe Waller-Bridge was nominated in many categories for the global hit Killing Eve, fans of Phoebe couldn’t help but wonder why the critically acclaimed second season of Fleabag was not up for any categories.

So why wasn’t Fleabag nominated for any BAFTAs? Here is everything you need to know about the supposed snub.

Why wasn’t Fleabag nominated?

The reason the second series of Fleabag was not nominated for any BAFTAs is because of the closing date for nominations.

Fleabag series 2 started on Monday, March 4th 2019 and aired for the following six weeks.

The BAFTA nominations were announced on Thursday, March 28th 2019. So the nominations would have already been decided before Fleabag had finished its run, making it ineligible.

Maybe next year?

There was outrage that Fleabag was not up for a single BAFTA.

The first season saw Phoebe Waller-Bridge take home the award for Best Female Performer in a Comedy Programme back in 2017, so fans were surprised to see the lack of Fleabag’s presence in the BAFTA categories this year.

But this is no snub and Fleabag will surely – and rightfully – be nominated at the 2020 BAFTAs.

What won instead?

Killing Eve – Waller-Bridge’s other leading project – led with the most nominations of the night, tallying up six.

It took home awards for Best Drama, Best Actress (for Jodie Comer) and Best Supporting Actress (for Fiona Shaw).

Other success stories of the night included Patrick Melrose, which took home two including Best Actor for Benedict Cumberbatch.

The snub of the night, however, did go to the Bodyguard, which took home just one award despite being one of the biggest shows of 2018.
