What does the series cover?

The eight-part documentary offers a disturbing look into the Maddie McCann case. It is often considered the most widely covered missing person’s case in modern history.

Three-year-old Madeleine vanished from an apartment in Praia da Luz, a holiday resort in the Algarve region of Portugal. This was on May 3rd, 2007.

Since then, the case has been in the media spotlight and attracted broad controversy. She remains missing to this day.

For those who know little about the case, it will prove helpful.

The series blends recent, original interviews and archive footage. This extends to both news footage and publically shot.

Kate and Gerry McCann refused involvement with the documentary. However, the episodes contain archive footage of them. It also employs dialogue from previously orchestrated interviews.

The German broadcaster received more than 500 phone calls and emails after airing the programme on the 2007 disappearance of British toddler Madeleine McCann in Portugal, the station said on October 16, 2013. The appeal, based on two years of work raking over the case by Scotland Yard’s officers, was first broadcast in Great Britain on the BBC’s “Crimewatch” programme.

How controversial has it been?

The Guardian’s Lucy Mangan labelled the series “…creatively and morally bankrupt.”

Similarly, The Telegraph’s Ed Power wrote that it was “bloated” and  “manipulative”.

More reviews continue to come in for the series. As expected, it’s proving overwhelmingly divisive.
