Who is the 'This Farming Life' narrator? Get to know James Thornton

BBC Two show ‘This Farming Life’, narrated by James Thornton, returned to our screens yesterday with Series 4. The episodes follow the working day of British farmers across the English countryside and into Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Narrator James Thornton’s voice-over to the show allows the viewer not only to be fully informed about what is going, but also connected and empathetic to the characters. The viewers are able to watch the struggles and triumphs of farmers and their families, while Thornton’s narration gives us unique insight into their lives.

Who is James Thornton?

The 44-year-old English actor and voice-over artist, who has been acting sine 1997, is best known for portraying the character of John Barton in the iconic and long-running soap opera ‘Emmerdale’ from 2009 to 2012. The role led him to a nomination for ‘Best Exit’ in the 2012 British Soap opera Awards.

After three years of playing the role of Barton, James Thornton decided to leave the soap opera in order to be able to spend more time with his wife, Welsh Actress Joanna Page. She herself has appeared in popular TV shows such as ‘Gavin&Stacey’, where she played Stacey Shipman, and movies likes ‘Love Actually’ where she shares the screen with Martin Freeman.

James Thornton and Joanna Page have three children together.
