The series has proved controversial. Arguably, its divisive reception was inevitable.

It offers a disturbing dive into the lengthy Madeleine McCann case. It is often considered the most widely covered missing person’s case in modern history.

Three-year-old Madeleine vanished from an apartment in Praia da Luz, a holiday resort in the Algarve region of Portugal. This was on May 3rd, 2007.

The case has been in the media spotlight ever since. She remains missing to this day.

Is there more material to work with?

The Madeleine McCann documentary utilised a lot of archive footage and original interviews. However, the case has been going on for so many years.

There is surely much more material that wasn’t used.

The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann: Season 2

On the other hand, there is no news of a second season. The documentary conveys a lot in its eight episodes, so perhaps director Chris Smith squeezed in all he wanted to.

Considering the reception, this may be a singular documentary event.
