I’m A Celebrity: Victoria Derbyshire’s breast cancer journey revealed - diagnosis to treatment

Victoria Derbyshire said she’d never have signed up for I’m A Celebrity before having breast cancer. So, when was she diagnosed? Is she now cancer-free?

Speaking of awards, one journalist who’s won BAFTAs and RTA’s is Victoria! She’s covered huge worldwide events such as 9/11, the London Olympics and football World Cups. While Victoria’s career has been hugely successful, she’s had a lot to deal with health-wise.

Victoria Derbyshire: Breast cancer

Journalist and broadcaster Victoria Derbyshire, 52, spoke of her battle with breast cancer during I’m A Celebrity series 20 episode 1: “I would never have said yes to this before having breast cancer, there is no way. But, life is short, I want to immerse myself…

The mum-of-two was diagnosed in 2015 with breast cancer after noticing that her nipple was inverted.

She took to Twitter on August 19th to share the news of her diagnosis after visiting the GP. Victoria also documented her journey, from having a mastectomy to eight months of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Victoria worried that she’d never see her two sons grow up, however, she has thankfully made a full recovery.

Victoria’s breast cancer diaries

From her diagnosis in 2015 to today, Victoria has spoken publicly about her battle with breast cancer.

As reported by The Mirror, following chemotherapy and radiotherapy, Victoria was put on hormonal therapy drug, tamoxifen tablets, for the next 10 years in a bid to stop the disease returning.

Victoria’s extremely open and honest diaries of enduring cancer were recorded in order to help others suffering from the disease, she wanted to “demystify” the illness.

You can watch Victoria’s diaries 1-6 online. She also released a book, Dear Cancer, in 2018, diarising her breast cancer story. Victoria has been cancer-free since 2016.

Victoria Derbyshire: Family

Victoria is a mum to two boys – Oliver, 16 and Joe, 13. Joe is running Victoria’s Instagram account (@vicderbyshire) while she’s in the I’m A Celeb Castle. She’s also married to Mark Sandell, 58. After 16 years together, the couple got married in 2018.

Mark is a TV and radio producer and runs a production company – 6foot6. Follow Mark on Twitter @MRSandell where he has around 3,500 followers. Judging by his Twitter bio, the father-of-two is a West Ham supporter and cricket fan.

At multiple points during her cancer journey, Victoria thought that her husband may have to raise their sons alone. Her youngest son, Joe, wrote on Instagram on November 10th that 2015 was “…the worst period for her and our family“. Thankfully, the family of four can now enjoy their lives together as she’s made a full recovery.
