The London Zoo: An Extraordinary Year takes us through the depths of one of the UK’s most popular wildlife parks.

ITV’s new two-part documentary explores the lives of animals living within London Zoo and its sister site Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire. It was filmed just days after lockdown restrictions were reintroduced, and continued to capture footage of the zoo right through to its opening days in June.

The series, which started on Thursday September 24th, also showcases to viewers how the social distancing measures impacted zookeepers, while we are guided through the zoo animals’ lives by a mystery voice. Who is the narrator of The London Zoo: An Extraordinary Year?

Stephen Fry is the voice behind the new ITV zoo documentary.

The 63-year-old English actor, comedian and writer is best known for his role in comic double act with Hugh Laurie Fry and Laurie, which was shown in A Bit of Fry & Laurie and Jeeves and Wooster.

He also writes adventure-based books such as Mythos, Heroes: Mortals and Monsters, Quests and Adventures, The Siege of Troy Untold, to name a few.

Where else have we seen Stephen Fry?

Stephen got to play his idol Oscar Wild in Wilde which he was nominated for as the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. He is also recognised for his roles in Inspector Thompson in murder mystery Gosford Park and Mr. Johnson in Love & Friendship.

The British actor was also seen in television roles such as Lord Melchett in BBC comedy Blackadder, as main characters Peter Kingdom in TV series Kingdom and Charles Prentiss in Absolute Power, as well as a guest role as Dr Gordon Wyatt on American crime series Bones.

He also got an Emmy award for his documentary Stephen Fry: The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive.

Stephen Fry: Family and background

Stephen married his husband and comedian Elliott Spencer, 32, in 2015. They have been happily loved-up since. He was previously in a 15-year relationship with Daniel Cohen, which ended in 2010.
