Who is Ella Al-Shamah?

  • Ella Al-Shamah is a 34-year-old National Geographic-sponsored explorer and her recent ventures involve co-presenting on Waterhole Africa’s Animal Oasis as well as the main woman in Jungle Mysteries: Lost Kingdoms of the Amazon.

Ella’s work as an explorer leads her to hostile territories such as landmines, visiting tribes and al-Qaeda zones. Ella is a paleoanthropologist who “specialises in extinct human beings” as she told the audience at her TED Talk event.

Ella got married at 21 and lived in Surrey, with her husband. According to The Times, the marriage lasted five years and at 24 she felt hopeless and lost, for two years she was too frightened to leave the house. Ella then made a change and started to work in genetics and human evolution becoming a Neanderthal Specialist. Not only is she the next Indiana Jones but she is also a stand-up comedian, she takes to the stage often and says she loves science and comedy equally.

Ella Al-Shamahi is co-presenting Africa’s Animal Oasis where she aims to uncover the complex dynamics of the waterhole for the very first time. According to BBC Two, they film across three dramatic periods: the middle of the dry season, the hottest time of year and the height of the first rains, to gain insights into the lives of some of Africa’s most iconic animals and uncover the increasingly important role of water in Africa with the growing impact of climate change.

Ella is also the explorer and presenter of the show Jungle Mystery: Lost Kingdoms of the Amazon. Where she goes to South America, in search of legendary cities and civilisations. Ella uncovers evidence of ancient civilisations and the first episode airs tomorrow, 5th December at 6:30 pm.
