Fans of First Dates know all too well that although the show is filled with laughter and love, there can be real moments of tragedy when the dates reveal their personal histories.

Series 12 has already had some pretty heartwrenching tales, as we heard about the 2004 tsunami which killed Sally’s husband.

And episode 4 (Tuesday, May 7th) was no different as Del explained her battle against breast cancer.

Here’s what you need to know about Del Bowen, her battle with cancer and her pursuit of love on First Dates!

Del and Michael.

Meet Del Bowen…

Del – full name Delyth – is a 36-year-old originally from Wales, but now living in Tooting, South London.

She has had a long, full and varied career. After graduating with a degree in French from the University of Bristol, Del worked in journalism, PR, and eventually settled in Communications.

Del is currently the Head of Communications at The Challenge, the UK’s leading charity for building a more integrated society!

Del’s cancer battle

After Del was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago, she began to document her battle against the disease on her blog, which you can read here.

She underwent fertility treatment, chemotherapy and radiotherapy over this period which saw her hair fall out and also had to have surgeries to remove the tumours.

However, in November 2016 Del was informed that her cancer showed no signs of recurrence!

Del’s blog is as hilarious and heartwarming as she is on First Dates, and if she writes this well then it seems her dreams of becoming an author shouldn’t be too far off.
