My 600-lb Life follows morbidly obese patients who are trying to reclaim their lives by losing weight and undergoing high-risk surgery, such as gastric bypass, sleeves or bands. In difficult scenes, the My 600-lb Life cast are told by health professionals that they need to change or risk eating themselves to death with their lifestyle and food habits.

The TLC show, which first aired in 2012, follows the contestant throughout an entire year in their life. From the day-to-day struggles they face at the size and weight that they are, doctor’s appointments and post-surgery updates.

Similar shows include 1000-lb Best Friends and 1000-lb Sisters, which follows a group of obese individuals as they adjust their lifestyles to become healthier. However, sometimes drama and family feuds get in the way. Whereas My 600-lb Life instead focuses on one or two individuals each episode.

In some cases, members of the My 600-lb Life cast become unrecognizable after shedding hundreds of pounds after epic amounts of weight loss. As patients try to focus on the future, they also unpick reasons behind their unhealthy relationship with food, whether that be facing tragedies, trauma or eating disorders.

Following 12 seasons and hundreds of episodes spanning almost a decade, fans have watched the highs and lows of the My 600-lb Life cast and how they overcome their troubles. Under the supervision of surgeon Dr Now, patients hope they’ll soon start a new lease of life and at a smaller size.
