Rogue trader Nick Leeson is the latest star rumoured to be entering the Celebrity Big Brother house.
The 51-year-old was jailed for his part in bringing down Barings Bank.
Barings Bank collapsed in 1995 after suffering losses of £827 million resulting from poor speculative investments, primarily in futures contracts, conducted by its employee Leeson. ING, a Dutch bank, purchased Barings Bank in 1995 for the nominal sum of £1 and assumed all of Barings’ liabilities, forming the subsidiary ING Barings.
There was a week-long manhunt as Nick attempted to avoid jail time, although he was eventually caught, convicted and jailed for six years. Nick was released from prison in 1999 after he was diagnosed with cancer.
He turned his talents to motivational speaking and writing, where his book Rogue Traders was eventually turned into a Hollywood movie. Think you know him already?
Here are 5 unusual facts about Nick Leeson.
Hollywood actor Ewan McGregor may be famous for portraying the role of Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi, but he’s also tried his hand at being Nick Leeson.
The 1999 movie Rogue Trader was based around Nick’s rise as a trader, although the movie was described as a ‘criminal waste of a brilliant story’.
Nick did all the legwork writing the god damn story, and Obi-Wan messed it up.
It’s good to know that should Nick Leeson enter the Celebrity Big Brother house, he would be one of the more courteous housemates in the kitchen area.
After racking up a debt of around $1.4 billion for his company, Nick fled the firm’s Singapore office, leaving nothing but a note that read ‘I’m sorry’.
‘I’m sorry’ for the loss of 1,200 jobs and the sudden crash of a firm, I’m sorry for leaving the fridge door open – it’s all the same thing, really.
Nick was one of the celebs that featured in Ireland’s 2012 Celebrity Apprentice series.
He was fired in week four, however, leaving everyone to ask the question; why the hell was he on the show in the first place?
The eventual winner was the lead singer of pop group B*Witched, Edele Lynch.
Nick never thought of himself as a criminal as, apart from the bonuses paid over to him for his ‘profit’ generation, he never personally benefited from his actions.
It’s something that is personified in his website, which runs this description of Nick:
The original Rogue Trader whose unchecked risk-taking and drive for success caused the collapse of Barings Bank.”
Because a drive for success always results in the collapse of a company…
A name-embroidered jacket once worn by Nick Leeson was sold for £21,000 in 2007.
Paul Taylor, who runs an investment fund backed by the Gulf state of Qatar, purchased the jacket from KPMG, the liquidator of Barings, which went bankrupt in 1995.
The stripey jacket looked like this, which Nick is still flogging on his Twitter account.
