Channel 4 series First Dates has thrown some very uncommon and pretty peculiar dating scenarios at us over the years.
Last year, we saw Dave embark on a date with a six-month pregnant bisexual, while season 12 recently featured Bristolian Damien as he attempted to summon the least offensive words having just found out that his date had ‘married herself’.

“It looks like you’re married and everything”
Small talk was blown straight out of the water when Dave noticed that his date, Melissa Denton, was wearing what looked like a wedding ring.
Well.
It was a wedding ring.
“I got married to myself”
Long before the starters had been ordered and even before poor Damien had time to take a second gulp of his white wine, Melissa dropped the clanger that she was married.

As Mel went on to explain how she had a wedding with 130 people – not including the two brides, her and herself – Damien could only sit and smile.
Bemused, dumbfounded and lost for words, Damien somehow managed to remain the perfect gent throughout.
The perfect date!
Despite the type of start that would have some first-time daters dashing for the nearest exit, Damien stuck around to find out more about Mel.
In fact, he listened intently with genuine interest and awe.
Mel dived into a tale of how she was dumped on Christmas Eve by text, following a five-year relationship. In a quest to prove that she didn’t need anyone else… she then decided to marry herself.
Mel explained:
After a series of failed marriages and then failed relationships, my wedding was a message of saying ‘I’m going to celebrate me and loving me’.
Adding “you’re thinking ‘how do I get out of this one'”, Damien quipped the perfect reaction.
Someone give this man a knighthood!

And they all lived happily ever after
Damien finished with a statement on feminism, adding: “We’re all equal, we can’t survive without the balance of each other. Internally and, you know, externally.”
With audiences roaring for Damo and Mel, the date was wrapped up with plenty of laughter as they decided to see each other again in the final post-date interview.
And, better yet, they even continued to date outside of the show, jetting off to holidays abroad together and attending the Glastonbury music festival.
