From the makers of Life Below Zero comes Port Protection Alaska. The National Geographic show sees individuals who live life off the grid in freezing cold temperatures. They have to hunt for their food and build their own shelters and life at Port Protection isn’t easy.

Who was Gary Muehlberger?

The people of Port Protection Alsaka live in a community of about 100 and being self reliant is of utmost importance when living in such unforgiving conditions.

One man who had self reliance down to a tee was Gary Muehlberger. Gary was a cast member on Port Protection Alaska from when the show first started in 2015 until his untimely death in 2021.

Speaking of life at Port Protection in 2015, 36-year fisherman Gary said: “We at Port Protection are very lucky for the a abundance of seafood, wildlife, almost everything we get comes from nature“.

What happened to Gary on Port Protection Alaska?

Gary Muehlberger was in his seventies when he appeared on Port Protection Alaska.

He lived by himself and had the company of his dog, Trapper, who could also be seen on the Nat Geo show.

In a 2016 episode of Port Protection Alaska, Gary said: “When you get to my age, you always got to go slow. It makes everything harder but I’d like to continue doing my work if I can.”

Gary passed away in 2021 at the age of 76.

Port Protection Alaska: Exploring Gary’s death

Much to the sadness of many Port Protection Alaska viewers, Gary passed away in March 2021.

As per KTOO, Gary died in a house fire which was reportedly accidental.

A Facebook post from Port Protection Alaska reads: “There was a fire at his home and he did not make it… Trapper is alive and well and being cared for… Please celebrate Gary’s well-lived life and know that he died a Happy Man.
