What is Watership Down 2018 About?
For those who haven’t seen the 1978 classic – or even the 1999 series follow-up – Watership Down follows a colony of rabbits attempting to escape their warren.
To escape, the group must slip from the clutches of evil General Woundwort while evading horrifying dangers such as hungry guard dogs.
Matthew Read, BBC Drama Commissioning Editor, said:
Before there was Harry Potter there was Watership Down; Richard Adams’ novel is one of the most successful books of all time and one of the biggest selling books in history.
It is fantastic to have the opportunity to bring a modern classic to a mainstream BBC One audience with such an incredible roster of actors alongside the talented team overseeing the animation.
For those wondering whether it’s a good idea to let their kids watch the new series or not, Watership Down 2018 is going to be a lot less brutal.
The 1978 film is renown for scenes of graphic violence and a merciless storyline that kills off main characters – who are, of course, cute little bunnies!
However, the 2018 version will be toned down on that front, reinvented to be both family-friendly and more reflective of the modern era.
