Where is Top Gear filmed in 2020? How to get audience tickets for outdoor recordings

Top Gear is back on our screens in 2020 but series 29 features a new-look outdoor studio. But just where is Top Gear 2020 filmed and how can fans apply for tickets?

Thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic, the way we live our lives has had to change like never before.

And yet life must still go on and the same can be said in the world of TV where shows have had to continue to operate but under drastically different circumstances.

One programme where that could not be more obvious is BBC car show, Top Gear, which returned to our screens on October 4th for its 29th series.

There was a noticeable difference when Paddy McGuinness, Freddie Flintoff and Chris Harris took to our screens as the usual studio setting was replaced by a drive-in festival look but just where was the new Top Gear series filmed and how can fans get tickets?

Top Gear series 29 on BBC One

Series 29 of Top Gear made its debut on Sunday, October 4th and for the first time ever made a home for itself on BBC One while also bringing the show outdoors for a drive-in festival look thanks to the Covid-19 precautions.

The new series kicked off in typical fashion as the trio of hosts took three company cars on a 24-hour live-in in Paddy McGuinness’s home town of Bolton, seeing plenty of local sights along the way, while Chris Harris also test-drove the new fearsome Ferrari SF90.

Where is Top Gear 2020 filmed?

  • Top Gear 2020 was filmed on the runway of the Top Gear track at Dunsfold in Surrey.

In each of its previous series, Top Gear has been largely filmed in a studio located in a disused aeroplane hangar at the Dunsfold airfield which makes up the Top Gear test track.

However, due to the Covid-19 restrictions put in place, filming with an audience couldn’t take place inside a studio and so, for series 29, Top Gear has taken its studio outdoors.

The new drive-in festival setup is actually located on the runway at the Dunsfold airfield and the stage could be seen in the background while the Stig was taking the Ferrari SF90 on its record-breaking lap of the Top Gear track.

How to get tickets for Top Gear

Top Gear is one of the biggest car shows in the world and therefore there’s often a clamour for tickets to see the shows being recorded live.

However, you can’t buy tickets for Top Gear directly.

Instead, you need to register on the site Lost in TV where you’ll be put on a waiting list and will get invited along when your turn arrives.

At the height of Top Gear’s popularity, when Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May were the show’s hosts, the waiting list for ticket applications was around two years long.

Series 29 of Top Gear meanwhile, with Paddy McGuinness, Freddie Flintoff and Chris Harris as hosts, continues each Sunday on BBC One until the five-episode series ends on November 1st while you can catch up with any episodes missed on BBC iPlayer.
